Old Schwamb Mill, Arlington, Mass.

schwamb mill

I can't say I've ever thought about how oval frames are made, much less about how they were made 150 years ago. Like everything old, crafty and made of wood, it's actually super awesome. During a recent trip to the Boston area, I took a tour of the Old Schwamb Mill in Arlington, which has been operating in one form or another since the 1860s - originally powered by a water wheel. It's a rare surviving example of a small business from the early industrial revolution and it still looks the part of a 19th century workshop.

Public House Brewing Company beer garden

The Public House Brewing Company and St. James Winery have their beer and wine garden in full swing this year in St. James, Mo. It was technically open in the fall of last year, but this is the first really spring and summer it's been happening. What a place! A lot of businesses in Missouri seem to struggle with creating a nice, designed space with good food and drinks that is also fun and super relaxed. The folks at the Public House and St. James Winery have nailed it with this one.

Route 66 Barbershop

Grant Kendall in his Route 66 Barbershop on College Street in Springfield, Mo. I used to go up and down this street a lot when I was a kid to visit my grandmother, but never noticed this wee little shop until last summer. I was actually living at my grandma's house at the time and saw that this was a functioning business and had to check it out. I didn't get around to it until this spring, but Grant was super easy to photograph and generous with his time. Grant took the business over a few years ago from a fellow who had cut hair there for more than 50 years!

Attorney headshots

I had the pleasure of photographing the attorneys at Collins & Jones on location at their office in Raymore, Mo. I was working with Novella Brandhouse in Kansas City, Mo. on the law office's new website and they did a great job on the site's design and message. We wanted a relaxed feel and studio look for the head shots and were able to make that happen in their conference room while working around their schedule.
